What Is The ABN Method For Learning Math

The ABN Method for Learning Math helps children to learn calculus from an early age, even at preschool age, and to lose their fear of math.
What is the ABN Method for Learning Math

The ABN method is one of the most interesting for children to learn math, a discipline that, for many of them, and also for their parents, is a complex battleground because they don’t like it, don’t understand and other reasons.

This method was created by Javier Martínez Montero and is expanding rapidly. In large steps, it grows thanks to the use of algorithms based on numbers – hence its name.

What is the ABN method?

The ABN method promotes mental calculation. For this, the accumulation of everyday objects is used, which can be as simple as toothpicks, clothespins, beans, buttons, etc.

It was created by Jaime Martínez Montero, PhD in Educational Sciences and Philosophy, who proposes an open structure on a training base  composed of hundreds of units with total freedom to be used by children.

In other words, it is a method that makes  children reach, through alternative paths, the same objective proposed by mathematics, so that this discipline becomes easier for them.

When to start and where to work

The ABN method for learning math is designed so that children can start it from the age of 3 onwards. Thus, it is convenient to adapt the contents of this childhood phase to the curricular level, so that this learning is fully implemented in children when they enter elementary school.

However, it is not a method exclusively for school use. It is interesting that the little ones use it at home, at school and in any other environment. In fact, one of its main benefits is that the little ones use everyday situations and manipulable materials to make calculations. That’s why anytime and anywhere is good for doing your math operations.

We must also remember that  children learn to think in numbers instead of values. Therefore, since 2008, when it was implemented in some schools, this method began to be used in the school environment and spread to all Spanish-speaking countries, as it has provided excellent results in terms of children’s mathematical skills.

Once the ABN method is used and internalized in a completely autonomous and intuitive way, the little ones start to use it to perform daily calculations in any context.

Benefits of the ABN method

The ABN method for learning math has many benefits for children to discover this discipline. Let’s look at some of the most important ones:

  • Pre-preparation. In other words, the child learns math before entering the elementary school cycle. In this way, she learns to subtract and add, so she is already advanced in the matter.
  • The method is adaptable. In other words, it adapts to each child, and not the other way around, thus becoming a customizable option for the little one to choose the methods that it is easier to memorize.

  • It promotes creativity among the little ones, leaving the children early for later learning.
  • Promotes self-confidence. It allows children to lose their fear of math and, in addition, also improve their self-image, as they will perceive themselves as more capable of great achievements.
  • Doubles the resolution capacity. A highly demanded skill is the individual’s problem-solving ability. Through mathematics, this method allows this goal to be achieved, promoting learning in this sense, being extrapolable to other subjects and situations.
  • It also  serves to raise children’s self-esteem.
  • Consequently, another benefit is  the satisfaction felt by teachers, who see how students exceed their goals and learn the much feared mathematics.
  • A subject that becomes a challenge. Instead of suffering for not being able to learn, children discover math from a new, more innovative and fun perspective, as if it were a challenge, almost like a kind of game.

About the ABN Method for Learning Math

The ABN method, increasingly used by teachers,  is very useful for children to have fun while learning math. Any element of everyday life can do, from the number of friends to the colors of the rainbow. That is, this formula is simple for all types of children. Thus, from an early age, they will not be led to see this dreaded subject as a problem, but as a diversion.
